Dominican Republic

Transforming communities and discipling the next generation

The Dominican Republic (DR) shares an island with the nation of Haiti in the Caribbean Sea. Its colonial past still impacts the economy and culture, with a significant divide between rich and poor. More than a third of its population live on less than $1.25 a day. We partner with GO Ministries as they bring transformation to the people of the DR.

AREAS OF IMPACT

GO Ministries (gomin.org) is a multi-faceted organization that is meeting needs and bringing hope to the Dominican Republic through church planting, community development, medical care, sports programs for youth, and more. Their mission is to redeem people, renew communities, and restore creation, and like Kensington’s own value of Through Others – making disciples that make disciples – they are equipping all kinds of leaders who are then investing in their own communities.

MOVEMENT IN DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

church planting

GO Ministries bring together local pastors from across the island for mutual encouragement, and to share resources and best practices. Pastors receive ongoing training at monthly meetings and through study at the GO Seminary of the Americas. Like Kensington, GO Ministries believes in "reproducing" new Christ-centered churches through discipleship – disciples that make disciples– and they have committed to planting 1000 churches over the next ten years.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING

GO Ministries invests in leaders who are investing in their communities – pastors, students, coaches, athletes. They provide 600 students with an education at Colegio Isaias Evangelico Emmanual, seminary students with training and residency, and skilled, Christian coaches and playing fields for their youth sports teams. Because of Kensington's faithful partnership with Go Ministries, Christian leaders are being raised up in the next generation of Dominicans.

SPORTS PROGRAM

Through GO Sports Program, coaches and teachers are equipped with resources to disciple their players and students. Coaches have an essential, positive influence over identity and spiritual growth in the next generation of Dominican leaders. Through athletic training, teamwork, and intentional mentoring, players are given hope of a future full of opportunities, which is especially important for young women who are often expected to limit their dreams to the traditional role in the home. The sports program includes boys' baseball, and girls' and boys' basketball and soccer. Players are also offered English and Bible classes and vocational training is in the works as well.

SHORT TERM TRIPS

We travel to the Dominican Republic on short term trips to partner with GO Ministries and work alongside local churches on service projects, including kids' camps and youth sports clinics.
