Overview: Julius Murgor established the Pokot Outreach Ministry (POM) in an effort to reach the Pokot tribe (estimated 1 million) with the gospel of Jesus. Julius a Pokot himself received his seminary degree in the US and returned to Kenya with a strategy to meet some of the greatest needs of the Pokot. By establishing orphanages, responding to famine relief, installing water wells, founding medical clinics, building schools and planting churches, POM has seen an incredible response to the gospel.

Relationship: In January of 2003 the leadership team at Kensington Community Church traveled to Kenya to explore partnership opportunities with Julius Murgor, POM and Harvesters International. During our visit it became evident that the Pokot were one of the world's forgotten people groups. Decades of droughts, famine and tribal unrest has left this semi-nomadic tribe hungry and struggling to survive.
Kensington has committed to assist Julius and POM to respond to the needs of the Pokot and accelerate the spread of the gospel. This commitment consists of sending both personnel and financial resources. Our long-term goal is establish a system and/or business ventures to help sustain the ongoing work, provide support for the care of the orphans and widows, and help to establish and resource a plan to reduce the devastation cause by the ongoing drought. In doing so our ultimate desire is to facilitate the spread of the gospel in this region.
Future Plans: In an effort to reach the Pokot, support the ongoing work and to respond to the persistent poverty crisis the following projects are scheduled.
Micro-Finance and Micro-Enterprise: Assist with developing businesses among the Christian leaders/businessman as a way to sustain the church's outreach.
Water Wells: By providing deep bore holes for water wells the semi-nomadic Pokot can build communities, educate their children, churches are planted and medical care provided. Hundreds of well are needed in the region, but a goal of 12 wells per year has been set. Additionally, a new drilling rig will need to be purchased as the current equipment is failing.
Orphans: This year we will need to develop resources to care (food, housing, and education) for 450 Pokot orphans.
Medical: Medical care available at the clinics is very limited. The need is great to establish a full service hospital in the region.
Famine Relief: The droughts in the region are coming more frequent and lasting longer. A proposal has been written by an Israeli Community Development group that will develop irrigation for large scale farms in the Pokot. This is a significant project but will require large scale support and resources.
Church Planting: As new areas of the Pokot are opened up to the gospel additional pastors and evangelists will need to be trained and supported in the field.
